Recovering data from increasingly complex systems

Hard drive failures can be divided broadly into logical failures and physical failures. In the data-recovery industry, the level of a provider’s recovery technology is often viewed in terms of the ability to recover data from hardware affected by physical failure.

Dealing with physical failures does indeed demand clean rooms and other sophisticated facilities as well as a high level of technology. However, all this does is to restore the hard drive’s functionality. There is still a need to respond to logical failures in order to extract the data. For servers that have multiple layers of virtualization or built-in redundancy, the ability to deal with logical failures significantly affects the amount of data that can be recovered. Advanced Design’s clean rooms used for handling physical failures are rated “Class 100,” the highest cleanliness level.
